DISCOVER YOUR LIFE’S PURPOSE IN 5 EASY STEPS
DISCOVER YOUR PURPOSE
Do you feel as though you’ll never discover your life purpose? If you don’t feel fulfilled by or happy with your life, you may be asking yourself the question, “What’s it all for?” First, we have to understand what we mean when we say purpose. Maybe your idea of life purpose is connected to a career. For others, life purpose may relate to spirituality or religious beliefs.
Often, we feel overwhelmed at the daunting fantasy of a perfect world. The world’s problems are big and overwhelming; what can one person do? Let’s face it, you’re not going to fix the planet, but you can adjust your world, that is the immediate area around you, your neighborhood, and your town.
Exploring what you want to do to have a positive impact on the world or make meaningful changes in your career or relationships can be a fascinating and fulfilling process in itself. But first, you have to rid yourself of all the noise. Clear your head of the purpose that society conditioned you to think.
Here are five steps to find your calling.
1. Discover your passion
Firstly, let’s get a journal. Journaling is useful for making self-evaluations. Create a dedicated journal that only you will see and read. Beginning this journal is the time for complete honesty with, and to, yourself. Look inwards to see what gets you excited. Get clarity to ensure you’re on the right track. Here are some questions or prompts to help you get inspired.
- What comes naturally to you?
- When have you been proud of some achievement?
- What creative ideas do you have?
- If you could change one thing about yourself, or your immediate world, what would it be?
- What subject can you talk about forever?
- What encourages you?
- Is there someone you could help with your skills, talent or words?
- When were you the happiest in your life?
- If you had one year to live, what would you complete?
Check your browser history for more ideas of where you been and what you’ve been doing. Think of this exercise as writing your mission statement. Your inspiration is right in front of you; all you have to do is declare it!
2. Identify your superpower
What is a superpower? It’s your expertise. Everyone excels at something. Write down everything you’re good at using single and two-word combinations. Add to this the things that others rave about you.
Can you find some that are related? Pick out a couple of powers that you identify with the most. Realize that instead of feeling helpless, you have a unique combination of experience and skill to offer the world. Do you feel better knowing that your strengths, talents, and skills have value?
3. Volunteer
Oft times, we can’t see our life’s purpose because we can’t see the bigger picture. Part of that is because we obsess with our identity or the reflection in the mirror. If we could instead look around us, we might see our life’s purpose through the eyes of someone else. You might want to consider volunteering.
Think about who you want to help. Do you relate to animals, children, or seniors? Whatever your life purpose is, you want to have a positive impact on your community, right? Imagine if your superpower skills could help fundraising activities or write submissions for grants? Many organizations could use a helping hand, but even if you couldn’t find one, maybe you could create a new organization.
4. Bring it all together
Now let’s connect the dots. You know your passions. You’ve discovered your superpowers. How do the pieces fit together? What are the common themes?
You might be passionate about animal rights. You might be an excellent public speaker. Put those two elements together, and you can choose to work or advocate for your local animal shelter.
Maybe you’re passionate about books, and you excel on the computer. Put those two components together, and you could be an online English tutor to people learning to speak English. Imagine the fun people you would meet and engage with socially.
5. Action!
Now you have your life purpose package you can swing into action. Find people who will inspire you. They could be historical figures or people in your life right now. Look for opportunities to support your life purpose with definite action. Be confident and decide to do what you can where you can. You might not be able to achieve world peace, but you can hold monthly cookouts with your neighbors.
Remember, what you think your purpose is today, can change tomorrow. That’s okay. With maturity and confidence comes a transformation. Moving out of one’s comfort zone can light a fire that gets bigger with progress. Keep your written purpose close at hand to help you stay the course; until it’s time to chart the next line of action.
